Coextrusion is an innovative plastic processing method in which several polymer layers are extruded simultaneously in a single step and combined to form a multi-layer product. In contrast to conventional extrusion, which produces only a single layer, coextrusion allows different materials with precisely defined properties to be combined in a single film or sheet.

How does coextrusion work?: The process is based on the use of several extruders, each of which melts and plasticizes a specific polymer granulate. The resulting melt streams are combined in a coextrusion tool. There, multi-layer composites are created that fuse directly with each other without the need for additional adhesives or solvents.

A typical example:
Top layer: provides surface gloss, color brilliance, or special functionalities (e.g., UV protection, scratch resistance).
Base layer(s): provide mechanical stability, reduce material costs, and enable the use of recycled material.
Functional layers: can add further properties such as a matte finish, barrier effect, or improved formability.
